Filters and programs used in this tutorial :-
Paint Shop Pro
Dragonfly's Sinedot II filter
Super Blade Pro

Materials :-
My jellyfish.cfg and silvery sparkle SBP preset Here
There is a text file included in the zip, if you don't know where to place the items.

some images have been made smaller to shorten file size

step 1.
Open new image 200x200 transparent and flood fill with
a dark colour this is just to make it easier to see the image.
Add a new layer

step 2.
Effects...Pluggins...Sinedots II
open the jellyfish pre-set and change the
outer density setting to 4 (you can use
the original setting, but I found that this
one works better). Moving the slider only takes the
setting number up to 2, but if you highlight the
figure using the mouse, you can type in the setting
that you want to use. If you are new to sinedots
and don't know how to open the .cfg
file click HERE for more information.

Some presets use different 'blend' settings and it is
important for this tutorial to make sure that the blend
in the sinedots setting is set to 'screen' like this:-

image

Make sure that the blend box is set to 'screen'
Click ok. This is the sinedot

image

Go to Edit...Copy.
Minimise or save this image for now,
you will need it again later

step 3.
Open a new Image 400 x 400 transparent
flood fill with a dark colour, go to
Edit...Paste... and paste as a new layer

step 4.
Go to View... Grid...then, go to View...Change Grid Guide
and snap Properties for change the grid for the current image
to 200 horizontal and vertical.
Using the Mover tool position the sinedots image so that
the top touches the centre line, like this

image

The grid can be turned off now

step 5.
Go to Layers...Duplicate... then to Image...Flip

image

Go to Layers...Merge...Merge Down.

step 6.
Go to Effects...Reflection effects...
Kaleidescope, using these settings

horizontal=0, vertical=0, rotation=0, scale=20, petals=8, orbits=0, radial suction=76, edge mode=reflect

image

Go to Image...Resize... With the all layers box unticked resize to 50%
Resample using Smart Size, then
Go to Adjust...Sharpness...and sharpen.
(smart size then sharpening worked better than Bicubic for this)

This image will be needed later, so minimise or save it
for now. It's quite pretty so is worth saving anyway.

step 7.
Open up your first image, go to Edit...Copy.
You can now close this image.

step 8.
Open a new image 400 x 400 transparent
Flood fill with a dark colour, then go to
Edit...Paste...Paste as a new layer
Using the grid again, with the same settings as before
position the sinedot so that the bottom touches
the centre line, like this

image

the grid can be turned off

step 9.
Go to Layers...Duplicate...Image...Flip

image

step 10.
Go to Layers...Merge...Merge Down

step 11.
Go to Effects...Reflection Effects...Kaleidescope
using the same settings as before

image

I love this shape so I saved it to use again

step 12.
Go to Image...Resize... make sure that the
'resize all layers' box is not ticked
and resize the layer to 50%
Resample using Smart Size, then
Go to Adjust...Sharpness...and sharpen.

step 13.
Repeat the kaleidoscope as in step 11.
This is what you should have

image

step 14.
Go to Effects...Plugins...Super Blade Pro
and apply the sg_silvery sparkle pre-set
(or preset of your choice)
(for a slightly different effect you can select
and float the shape before applying the SBP preset,
but I didn't do that in this case)

image

step 15.
Open the image you left in step 6
Go to Edit...Copy.
this image can now be closed.

step 16.
Go to Edit...Paste...Paste as a new layer

image

Go to Layers...Merge...Merge Down
You're now ready to tube the star or frame it

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
I would like to give a big thankyou to all the lovely people on
Sinedot Addicts who tested this tutorial for me
